Allstate research shows that the United States has a need to improve trust

Northbrook, Illinois, June 26, 2025 – The United States has the desire and resources to increase trust, paving the way for increased prosperity. Allstate’s research highlights that high levels of local engagement can be used to increase trust in each other and our institutions, thus reversing the decline in trust that has plagued the world.

“Trust in government, business and leadership has dropped dramatically over the past two decades, threatening the foundations of freedom and economic prosperity,” said Tom Wilson, chairman, president and CEO of Allstate Corporation. “As one of the most trusted brands in the United States, we are working to strengthen trust. This study shows that leveraging community engagement to expand relationships will improve trust and isolate the United States from the world.”

National surveys show that local communities are still in strong participation and there is a way to strengthen the “unified” part of the United States.

Americans feel both optimistic and optimistic about the future, but people have high concerns about the cost of living, the state of our country, and personal safety.

  • Americans are in good shape, including two-thirds of the feeling, and are 74% optimistic about the future of the community.
  • However, at the same time, three-quarters of respondents were concerned about the cost of living, involving 72% of the country’s situation and 64% of the safety of families and loved ones.
  • While 59% of respondents said they trust their neighbors, the number dropped to 41% for people in the United States

More than two-thirds of Americans participate in the local community and expect to increase their participation.

  • 68% of Americans reported participating in local communities, with similar numbers expected to increase their participation in the future.
  • The U.S. Census Bureau reported that volunteering increased by 20% in 2023, reversing the negative effects of the pandemic. Americans invested 5 billion hours of volunteer service, equivalent to 2.5 million workers, worth more than $167 billion.
  • “We see thousands of community-based organizations that create value in each community,” said Kate Nack, vice president of Allstate Foundation.

Community engagement and trust are highly correlated and mutually reinforcing.

  • People with higher levels of trust are more satisfied with their community, and despite the differences, they have more social interactions and trust others.
  • Trust is self-reinforcement – the more we trust, the more we build trust.

Increased trust helps communities solve difficult social problems, thus creating a pathway for greater prosperity and personal well-being.

  • Higher levels of trust can improve collaboration, problem solving and personal mental health.
  • 78% of respondents with a trust level were involved in the community, while 44% of respondents with a lower trust level were involved.

The pathway to rebuilding trust begins at the individual and local levels.

  • The increase in community interaction, whether it is volunteering, informal support or simply having conversations, is the basis for building a relationship of trust.
  • All generations and individuals are needed to improve trust. The high level of trust in the baby boomers can take advantage of change. Millennials and Gen X are ready to lead. Generation Z longs for more connections.
  • “Allstate and Aspen Institute have started threeThe one-year initiative aims to enhance trust at the local level to strengthen our national citizenship structure. ”

“The community roots in the United States are justified and we have the resources, talents and desire to improve trust. Solidarity with community participation will ensure prosperity and freedom increase in local communities and nations.”

Allstate conducted a survey between April 10 and April 30, 2025, reaching 5,000 adults in the United States, a finding that provides actionable insights into architectural trust.
