Carney joins Robertson’s Cabinet

The new secretary of housing and infrastructure – who co-founded the Happy Planet Organic Juice Company with others before turning to politics in 2005 – is one of the 24 new faces of Carney Free Cabinet.

Carney said Robertson was involved in the team that formulated the government’s housing policy, which will look at how Ottawa can help municipal costs reduce and “avoid” to build more homes.

Robertson served as a member of the provincial New Democratic Legislature and served as mayor of Vancouver from 2008 to 2018.

Robertson’s record in housing is that prices have swelled during his tenure as mayor, which gave North America the most expensive housing prices, said Pierre Poilievre, head of the federal opposition.

Canadian Mortgage and Housing Company data show that the average price of single-family and semi-detached homes throughout the wider metropolitan area rose 179%.

Housing is a key platform for Carney during the election period, including a commitment to double the residential construction rate over the next decade to reach 500,000 homes each year.

“We’re going to have to change the way we build it. And, there’s a lot of expertise, not just developing a lot of expertise in British Columbia,” Carney said.

“Secretary Robertson is very familiar with this. We will combine it, but with a pan-Canadian strategy to really drive this.”

Robertson also became the minister in charge of economic development in the Pacific.
