How to motivate yourself to start a fire

Note: Before reading our post today, I want you to know that there is a super cool fire project that I would love to tell you at the end of the post. Keep reading to find out what it is…
The fire is not a sprint, it is a marathon. It takes years of hard work, discipline and commitment. Just like a marathon, the first few miles felt great. You feel pumped. You’re beyond your budget. You open a brokerage account. You cut off Netflix, restaurants, shopping and invest all the penny you save. You are the tornado of efficiency.
But then you hit 13 miles and bored in the middle. Excitement fell. The fun is over. Your legs are jelly, your lungs are on fire, you are very tired and can fall asleep. Suddenly, blowing most salaries, renting that upscale apartment with the beachfront view sounds tempting. Suddenly, the stock market plummets, surrounding your portfolio, pushing your FI target postal into another galaxy.
All you have to do is reach out and say, “Tighten! I’ll go out!”
you are not alone. This happened on our way to FI. What you need is to motivate you to keep going and get to the finish line, no matter how far it seems.
Here are 5 techniques I use that hopefully helps you through the “boring middle” and stops you from burning it all (not intended).
The “why” symbolizes you
Why did you fire this time? Is it to escape bad jobs? Spend more time with your family? Become a traveler? Follow your passion without having to worry about your bill?
Find the reason, symbolize it, and place it where you can see it every day.
This may be a photo of your family. Postcards of the place you want to go. A special pen symbolizes your dream of becoming a writer.
My symbol is Super Mario’s invincible star. You know the one that makes Mario shine and rainbow-colored, letting him run in enemies and danger without any damage, while speeding up the background music?
I printed a photo of the stars and posted it on my cube wall. This way, whenever I have to work overtime, be yelled by my boss or fight with a toxic colleague, I can raise my head and remind me that when I arrive at FI, I will be invincible. No longer worry about layoffs, no longer feeling upset about my boss’ orders, no longer losing sleep due to TPS reports. Then, I would hum invincible star music and continue my day.
If you don’t know your “why”, it’s easy to give up.
Find your own version of the invincible star.
Focus on the journey, not the results
For most of my life, I have been obsessed with “results.” When I was a kid, my parents asked me to propose to other children. A good person means praise, it is a bad person, which means beating and public humiliation. Hobbies are a waste of time unless they lead to income. Not surprisingly, this causes a lot of insecurity, anxiety and shame. After losing sleep, I ran into my 30s in my 30s.
After becoming FI, I realized that focusing on results and external verification only leads to burnout. The journey itself should be more important than the results.
Now, some of you may think that the work is related to the outcome and you have no choice because if there is no outcome, you will be fired. I agree with you that while you can’t completely ignore the importance of the result and focus only on this, not on the journey/process to get there, it makes the whole thing unmaintainable.
Just like you are trying to lose weight and get healthier, if you focus only on the results, you will inevitably recover from weight loss. Given that you focus on being a healthier person and align lifestyle changes with your personality, you can keep these changes and feel happier for a long time even if you don’t reach extreme weight loss goals.
The same is true for parenting. If you focus on the end result of your children taking care of themselves as they are old, or make them very accomplished so that you can replace life with them or bragging, you will inevitably be disappointed. These things are not only beyond our control, but they will take decades to pay off. But if you love the parenting process, sleepless nights, endless cleanups and constant collapses don’t seem that bad. You can focus on their embraces, stupid and exciting milestones, turning from an inactive potato to an incredible villain.
By the way, if you have kids on the fence, you only have them if you like the process of raising children. Otherwise, parenting will become a great disappointment. Too much work has been done for too long to rely on results. Kids are not for everyone. Don’t let other people or society push you into it.
Your fire journey can only be sustainable if you enjoy the process and not just the result.
Don’t do it alone
One of the reasons we are able to get our job done is because we work on the team. If you are part of a tribe, you are more likely to fire and the social aspect is motivated. When I say “tribe”, the bigger I don’t mean. Just another person, a fire friend who “cycles or dies” will make the journey of firing even more fun.
When I grew up, I didn’t have many friends. However, only 2-3 intimate relationships are enough to get through the tough times. You don’t need the entire squadron. Find some “Ride and Death” fire companions to enjoy your time. You can do this by joining a Pelectfi or Rebel Finance Facebook group or creating your own Facebook group in your region.
This also helps because once you quit, the freedom of time you get will feel empty unless you can sync with the person you want to hang out with. If you can find some firefighting partners for “cycling or dying”, that’s the best feeling ever, because not only have a flexible schedule, you can also work on passion projects and hang out with them anytime, anywhere.
Realize that time will pass
One of the most useful statements we hear when we try to publish is that “it will pass anyway.” Even though it took us seven years to finally publish our first book, these seven years will be over whether we work hard or not. When we started, our writing teachers told us that on average, it took 7-10 years and we felt scared. Is it so long? But it’s too much time! Even if it’s a point? But she reminds us that time will pass by any means, so we can start as well. In 10 years, you will be happy to spend time working towards what you want because you can’t stop time.
Keep your motivation with music
They say life is like toilet paper, the closer it gets to the end, the faster it will be.
This is because of how our brains view time. Minutes, hours, days won’t be faster. They’re just Feel Because of how our brains work faster.
When we were children, the day would extend forever. Everything is novel and our brains keep soaking it all. But as we get older, our daily work starts working, these days are integrated. Our brains just filter everything. This is the design. Our brains have evolved to detect only differences in our environment so as not to be eaten by lions.
That’s why I’ve experienced such slow days during the pandemic. Milestones and celebrations are gone, and so are time.
That’s why Travel feels like he lives a lot of life thanks to all new sensory inputs. Every day is different.
That’s why when I work for a long time, the only thing that makes time tolerate is listening to the radio. My brain is no longer fixed to the clock, which minimizes my awareness of the past, which makes the day feel less long and boring. The study also showed through research that the music that triggers the release of dopamine in the brain because it is participating in stimulation rather than focusing on the passage of time.
This is why music takes faster time when exercising or doing long-distance cycling.
Sadly, I didn’t have a hot soundtrack at that time, so I just listened to random pop music on the table.
The good news and what I am so happy to share with you today is that unlike me, you are lucky to be able to download the entire Fire Foundtrack!
My friends Alan, Katie and Finn come together to create a band called Rebels, whose first Fire album will be released on Friday, March 21!
I’ve heard of hot songs in the past, but usually there is only one song, which I don’t remember later. This album is different. I found myself buzzing all the time, even though I haven’t heard it in a few days. In addition, there are too many styles of music, namely Hop, Hop, Jazz, Rock, etc., so there is a choice for each music preference.
To give you a taste, you can access 3 free tracks here to make your workday faster.
Remember how I talked about “Born Middle”? Well, there’s a song about this, which is one of my favorites on the album. Guess what it is? They even exit like a millionaire single, you can click on the MP3 player below and listen here!
