Housing Councilor Amesbury pleads guilty to assault – Mortgage Strategy

Councilor Mike Amesbury, a member of the housing committee, pleaded guilty to assault after attacking a man in Cheshire.
Amesbury, representing Runcorn and Helsby, admitted assaulting Paul Fellowes, 45, at Chester Magistrates’ Court.
He was suspended from the Labor Party after CCTV footage of the incident, which took place at 2.45am on October 26 last year, emerged.
He remains a member of parliament and sits on the 11-member housing committee as an independent.
Alison Storey, prosecuting, told the court Fellows was in Frodsham town center and went to a taxi rank alone in the early hours of the morning while drunk.
Storey added: “Mr Amesbury arrived at the same taxi rank. He was also lonely and he had also been drinking.
The court heard Fellowes recognized Amesbury and complained to him about bridge closures in the town
This led to an argument in which Amesbury, 56, knocked Fellowes to the ground before a series of further blows.
Amesbury has previously said he felt “threatened” by Fellows.
District Judge Tanveer Ikram said sentencing guidelines indicated the MP’s punishment would cover “high-level community orders or [could] The maximum penalty is imprisonment.”
“I will keep all my options open at this stage,” the judge added.
Speaking outside court, the MP said his actions were “very regrettable”, adding that he was “sincerely sorry” to Fellows and his family.
Amesbury will be sentenced next month. If he is sent to prison or given a suspended sentence, he could lose his seat in the House of Commons.
A sentence of less than a year, even if suspended, would subject him to recall proceedings, triggering a by-election if 10% of registered voters in his seat sign a petition calling for recall.
A jail sentence of more than a year would mean he automatically loses his seat.
Amesbury won the seat at July’s general election with a majority of 14,696 votes.
He has been a Labor MP since 2017 and served as a shadow minister from 2018 to 2024.
A Labor spokesman said: “It is right that Mike Amesbury takes responsibility for his unacceptable behaviour.
“As legal proceedings are ongoing, we are unable to comment further.”
