Canadian factory and wholesale sales fall as trade war toll rises

Author: Laura Dylan Kane

(Bloomberg) — Canadian manufacturing sales fell 1% in August and wholesale revenue fell 1.2%, highlighting the impact of U.S. tariffs on key trade-exposed industries.

The monthly losses were not as severe as expected by economists polled by Bloomberg, who expected declines of 1.5% and 1.3% respectively.

Statistics Canada data on Wednesday showed lower sales of transportation equipment contributed to manufacturing losses in August. Falling revenue from autos and parts and food and beverages contributed to lower performance at wholesalers.

In terms of sales volume, manufacturers’ sales fell by 1.5% and wholesalers’ sales fell by 1.3%. Total manufacturing inventories increased by 0.3%, and wholesale inventories increased by 0.7%.

Transportation plant sales declined due to lower aerospace products and parts production after hitting a record high in July, as well as lower motor vehicle and parts revenue. Meanwhile, sales of primary metals increased, led by a 45% increase in aluminum sales despite U.S. tariffs.
