New Democrats: Loss of bills that result in high rents and lack of housing due to rush to resolve the Kuomintang legislature

The Nova Scotia New Democratic Party leader highlighted two of the party’s housing bills that she said were shelved as the administration rushes to end the fall meeting of the legislature.

Claudia Chender said a bill would create a residential rental law enforcement unit and a rent control system that would link the rise to the consumer price index.

Chander said the second bill would set an annual housing supply target of 12,500 units and set up an independent housing official to track the government’s progress.

Both opposition bills were submitted on Friday but were not read out because the Progressive Conservative government ended its work just eight days later.

Chander said the short meeting time means that issues such as living costs and affordable housing have not been fully discussed in the Legislature.

The government passed several bills in its eight-day meeting, including an amendment that makes it easier for victims of domestic violence to modify their leases after the abuser moves out.
