Ontario allows for more density, build heights near Toronto transport

Rob Flack said changes to Toronto’s official plan will allow 1.5 million homes in the city over the next 25 years.

He said having more people living near buses will also help alleviate the pressure of impasse on city streets.

Mayor Olivia Chow said the former mayor submitted a similar plan to the province five years ago that only allowed more homes, and the changes will now help triple.

Zhou said the plans will still be approved by the city council.

The plan will increase the density and maximum altitude around 120 bus stops across the city, and the province said it will continue to work with Toronto to develop plans for the other 14 transit station areas.

The news comes as the province lags behind the pace of residential construction required to build 1.5 million homes across the province from 2031 to 2031, compared with just 94,753 starts last year, including long-term care beds, retirement family suites and post-secondary student housing beds.
