One-third of tenants spend more than 50% of their income on rent: Survey

Those who spend more than half of their income are more likely to experience longer searches, higher frustrations and consider moving cities, according to lentals.ca.
Despite the financial difficulties, the survey found that 66% of people who spend on rent still said they don’t want roommates.
For young young renters aged 18 to 24, about half of them make up more than 50% of the rent, and the common budget for monthly rents in this cohort ranges from $1,000 to $1,499.
The report, which surveyed 510 renters in Canada, said only 22% of respondents spent 30% or less on rent, which is often considered an affordable benchmark.
The national average required rent fell 3.6% a year ago to $2,121, marking the 10th straight month of decline so far in 2025, with the largest.
