Toronto’s new renovation charter takes effect to protect tenants

The City of Toronto said the new charter is designed to protect tenants from “malicious evictions” occurring in the guise of renovation.
Landlords seeking a lease renovation license must now notify tenants of their intent and reach a consensus on temporary living arrangements or compensation for renters, the city said.
It said that even after the tenant intends to return to his unit, a license is required.
The landlord must apply for a permit within 7 days of issuing a notice of termination of the lease (called N13 notice) to the tenant.
Tenants who suspect landlords are not concerned about the new charter can report it to the city, the city said.
