“Accept an idea. Make that idea your life. Think about it, dream about it, live by the idea. Fill your brain, your muscles, your nerves, every part of your body with that idea and ignore other ideas. That’s the way to success.” Swami Vivekananda

The secret to success is to focus on one thing and never give up. When you focus on one thing single-mindedly, you eventually become an expert at that thing.

For most self-made millionaires in my Rich Habits Study, persistence is a byproduct of creating a clear vision for the future they want. You can gain clarity through a process I call “dream setting.” Once you have clarity, passion, focus, good habits, and perseverance will follow.

In my Wealth Habits study, it took the average self-made millionaire 12 to 32 years to amass a fortune of $3.3 to $7.4 million, depending on their path to wealth.

However, most people do not become wealthy. Less than 5% of people become self-made millionaires.

To make matters worse, the vast majority of people struggle with poverty or escape it on one paycheck.

Why?

Those in my study who were financially disadvantaged did not have a clear vision of who they wanted to be or do in the future. Without clear thinking, single-minded focus, passion, winning habits, and persistence are impossible.

Because unsuccessful people lack clarity, they easily succumb to what I say bright shiny object syndrome – Always pursue new things.

People with “bright shiny object syndrome” cannot focus on one thing for years if that thing doesn’t provide an immediate reward. Due to the lack of clarity, they will eventually lose interest and start looking for something else. They take their attention away from what they are doing and look for something else to do.

People with this disease will never achieve any success. They are too busy shifting their attention from one thing to another.

I now see this happening all the time since I discovered this bad habit of bright shiny objects. My eyes were wide open now. I’ve seen people I know, some of whom I’ve even worked with, put their all into a program for a year, even two, and then quit when they weren’t immediately successful.

Unfortunately, bright shiny object syndrome is the rule rather than the exception.

If you want to be successful in life, you must have a clear vision of who you want to be and what you want to do. This clarity infuses you with enthusiasm, focus, and forces you to form habits that you automatically stick to.

Be clear about who you want to be and what you want to do. This clarity instills enthusiasm in you and forces you to develop successful habits, thereby developing the perseverance you need to succeed and become rich.
