FOS plans to increase levy in 2026/27 – Mortgage strategy

The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) plans to increase levies on financial firms by an extra £16m.
The Ombudsman today launched a consultation which includes proposals to increase the current levy from £70m to £86m by 2026/27.
The FOS is also consulting on increasing case fees from £650 to £680 in line with inflation.
The ombudsman also expects to deal with more complaints against banks and consumer credit in 2026/27 – a category that includes mortgage grievances.
The FOS said today that it expects to receive 79,900 complaints in the “other banking and consumer credit” category in 2026/27, an increase of 1.8% on the 78,500 currently dealt with in 2025/26.
The FOS did not detail how many specific mortgage complaints it expected to see, or how many related to brokers or lenders.
Last month, the FOS reported a 27% increase in complaints against both residential first charge mortgages and buy-to-let (BTL) mortgages between July and September this year.
