Court rules Parkland shooting triggers single insurance claim

Evanston argued that under the policy, each shooting that results in injury — or each victim — should be considered a separate “incident.” This interpretation would require the Sheriff’s Office to pay a self-insured retention (SIR) of $500,000 per incident before triggering Evanston’s coverage, which could leave the Sheriff’s Office responsible for millions of dollars in out-of-pocket costs before any insurance pays out. However, the Sheriff’s Office believes the entire shooting should be considered a single incident, meaning only one SIR and $500,000 annual deductible would apply.
