Detroit to pay nearly $6 million in compensation for bus driver’s death in multiple crashes

The city of Detroit has agreed to pay $5.85 million to settle a lawsuit involving a pedestrian struck and killed by a city bus, the second death involving the same driver since 2015.

Court records show Wayne County Judge Katherine McCarthy signed off on the agreement last week.

In June 2023, 67-year-old Janice Bauer was struck by a city bus while walking in a crosswalk in downtown Detroit.

The driver, Geraldine Johnson, was sentenced to six months in prison a year ago after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor moving violation that resulted in death.

Lawyers for Ball’s estate said in a court filing that Johnson was involved in 19 other accidents and that first responders knew he was a dangerous driver. In 2015, a man was hit and killed while trying to unload his bicycle from the front of a bus.

The union representing the drivers said Johnson did not want to resume driving after the first death, but she had no choice if she wanted to keep a city job.

Johnson has yet to speak publicly about Ball’s death. “She didn’t see her at all,” said Sharon Clark Woodside, her criminal lawyer.
