Ontario proposes refunding harmonized sales tax for some first-time homebuyers

The Ontario government has previously said the province would follow suit if the federal government eliminates its portion of the harmonized sales tax for first-time homebuyers.
The federal government earlier this year proposed rebates for first-time buyers on the federal portion of the HST on new and substantially renovated homes worth up to $1 million.
Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy says Ontario’s provincial tax refund will appear in next week’s fall economic statement.
While homes worth $1 million or less are eligible for the full rebate, homes worth $1.5 million or less will receive partial rebates in phases.
Ontario is backing its housing starts target, with Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Rob Flake saying the move will help spur new home construction.
