U.S. insurance industry loses $101 billion due to weather disasters

Rigorous methods and conservative estimates

This multi-billion dollar hazard data set was built based on peer-reviewed methodologies and is now managed by Climate Central after transitioning from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). The analysis was drawn from more than a dozen public and private sources, including FEMA, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the National Interagency Fire Center and insurance industry data. The method has been improved to account for potential biases, but the current method is still considered to underestimate average losses by 10-15%. Therefore, the reported numbers should be considered conservative.
