Trump, Carney meet in Washington, trade struggle delays

(Bloomberg) – Mark Carney will travel to the White House next Tuesday for his second visit to the Canadian Prime Minister, with officials in both countries negotiating trade and security issues.
Carney and President Donald Trump will hold a working meeting that day, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office on Friday.
Canada, the United States and Mexico all conducted consultations last month to prepare for the 2026 review of the North American Free Trade Agreement signed by Trump during his first term.
“The Prime Minister’s work visit will focus on common priorities in establishing a new economic and security relationship between Canada and the United States,” Carney’s office said.
He led the Liberal Party to visit Washington early in May the week after winning the national election.
At that meeting, the Prime Minister tried to stop Trump’s further statements about Canada becoming the 51st state in the United States – comments that angered Canadians and contributed to boycotting U.S. travel and products. “As you know from real estate, there are places that will never be sold,” Carney told Trump at the time.
The two men also met in June at the Summit of Seven Leaders in Alberta. After the party, Carney said they will try to reach an agreement on trade and tariffs in July.
Instead, Trump announced on July 31 that the United States would raise so-called fentanyl tariffs on Canadian products to 35%. However, these tariffs do not apply to most commodity trade between the two countries.
U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum, automobiles and wood – all major export industries in Canada – still exist.
Carney’s Secretary for U.S. Trade Dominic Leblanc told parliamentary committee Thursday that he still hopes to reach an agreement on tariffs on those sectors before reviewing the U.S.-Mexico-Canada agreement.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the meeting.
