Minister said Canada, the United States holds “technical” negotiations on tariffs on relevant departments

Brian Platt

((Bloomberg) – Canada and the United States agreed to conduct technical negotiations on sectoral tariffs, said Dominic Leblanc, Canadian cabinet minister.

Leblanc gave very little details, but both sides decided to “conduct technical discussions” involving “Canada believes we can reach different sectors that are in line with the economic interests of both countries.”

Canada is facing penalties for steel, aluminum, automobiles and timber exports, but LeBron declined to say whether the quota limits for those departments are part of the negotiations.

He said the discussions continued this week in Washington, led by Michael Sabia, a top Canadian civil servant.

The focus of the negotiations is to “common understanding” of the choices that ultimately form that will ultimately form “a series of small deals that have accumulated to put us in a better position than we are now,” said LeBron, the secretary in charge of U.S. trade and held a meeting with Lutnik last week.

On Wednesday, Carney told reporters he had a “very constructive” conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this week and believed they could reach a deal on industries affected by the tariffs. “Don’t expect one of these strategic departments to be instantly white smoke, but that’s the type of conversation we’re having,” Carney said.

Industry Minister Melanie Joly told reporters that more support for these departments came from the government and pointed out the need for steel mills to rotate to provide products for the Canadian domestic market. She takes housing construction, port expansion, railway and shipbuilding projects as examples.

The steel mill is “the crown jewel of our manufacturing industry”, Joley said, adding that Canadian national security includes making steel in the country.
