The number of homes completed in Q1 fell 21% last quarter: ONS – Mortgage Strategy

The latest Office of National Statistics (ONS) data shows that 38,780 new homes were built and completed between January and March 2025.
Data shows that compared with a total of 49,160 quarters in the previous quarter, 21% of home construction and completion were 21%.
The number of homes built and completed also fell by 6% compared to the same period last year, when the total number of homes completed was 41,220.
ONS figures show that there were 35,640 homes starting in the first quarter, compared with 32,010 in the previous quarter, up 11%.
The number of homes starting at 30,350 has increased by 17% compared to the same period last year.
Commenting on the latest data, Ross Dalzell, managing director of Aldermore Property, stressed that the latest figures for new homes are built and completed over 36,000 below the government’s quarterly target of 75,000.
“Today’s data suggests that the government has not met its 75,000-quarter construction target. While the commitment to build 1.5 million homes in the next parliament is ambitious, it is achievable, but bold action is only taken at all stages of the home construction cycle.”
“Aldermore fully supports the efforts to build 1.5 million families and recently met with Policy Advisor No. 10 to discuss how we can remove the barriers the country faces and unlock the homes that Britain is desperately needed.”
