Outshore banks get evacuation orders as Hurricane Irene expands pummels east coast

Local officials in North Carolina took quick action to protect residents and visitors. Dare County ordered a mandatory evacuation of Hatteras Island, citing concerns that NC 12 (the main evacuation corridor) may be inaccessible. “Dare Dahl County is still in a state of emergency and the mandatory evacuation order on Hatteras Island is actually effective,” officials warned.
