MOJ data shows the increase in mortgaged property – Mortgage Strategy

All mortgage actions are increasing, according to the latest data from the Department of Justice (MOJ).

The increase in mortgage claims to 5,348 increased to 6,537, accounting for 22% increase compared to the same quarter in 2024.

The increase in these mortgage claims is recorded in all regions.

To react to news, Stepchange public policy manager Adam Butler said:

“Although interest rates and mortgage default rates have dropped, many are still struggling. As property rises, we are worried that debtors may fall into a further crisis.”

For Stepchange customers who default on mortgages, the average arrears to date have so far reached £11,531, making up one of the largest common types of defaults. This has increased from £10,239 (12%) and £6,054 (90%) in 2023 compared to 2024.

The MOJ data also suggests that all landlord ownership actions are decreasing. Landlord ownership claims decreased by 24,491 to 22,364 (9%) compared to the same quarter in 2024,

All regions except the Northeast, Southeast and Wales have seen a decrease in landlord ownership claims. All types of landlord claims remain concentrated in London.

MOJ numbers were released simultaneously with data from UK Finance Corporation, which also showed an increase in property – albeit more modest.
