You will most likely be asked to pay for the meal upfront (so no one in the restaurant knows you are a mysterious shopper), but usually you will be paid back and sometimes even pay a small fee.
I’ve done a lot of mysterious shopping in the past, which could be an easy way to try new places at a free or discounted meal. I’ve already received a few $100 meals for free with Mystery Shopping, which is always a pleasant and relaxing time. You just want to make sure you follow all instructions carefully. Do this if they ask you to arrive at a certain time, interact with the staff in a specific way, or order from a part of the menu. Also, don’t forget the receipt as you will be asked to take a photo and hand it in as evidence of your going.
