Ontario’s dining table bill speeds up homes and buildings at 1.5 million target

Municipal Affairs and Housing Secretary Rob Flack said Ontario needs to make “immediate changes” to home building rules, with his focus on the next two years to stimulate development.

He will introduce a large bill today that will reduce the scope and amount of research that municipalities may need to speed up certain smaller differences and standardize and simplify developers’ payments, which municipalities use to fund infrastructure for building housing, such as water and sewers.

Likewise, the bill will standardize building requirements and clarify that municipalities cannot create building standards outside of building regulations and limit the affordable unit required by municipalities in certain residential developments.

Flak said the legislation responded to municipal leaders’ recommendations and would help reduce housing costs and keep workers working in the face of economic uncertainty.

The government also announced today that it will add $400 million to two funds used by municipalities to build housing infrastructure.
