Photos of me when I was 14 (this is a valuable finance lesson my parents taught me)

(That’s a photo of me when I was 14. I tried to find one of my photos when I was 12, but most people were cut into small sizes and album shapes!)
When I was 12, my parents asked me to start doing something that ultimately changed my life, and I am still very grateful today.
What is it? They got me to start paying for many of my own expenses – things like clothes, gifts and personal spending.
I saw this was one of the best gifts they gave me. Because it challenged me to learn to stretch my money as much as possible and prompted me to think about the box. For example, I find that I often buy clothes for the whole season in thrift stores for $12-$20 (their dollar days!) instead of spending $60-0 at a retail store.
When it comes to money, the habit of thinking sets the stage for years of creative savings and smart spending. That’s the mentality of “find it”? It has saved thousands of dollars over the years!
It also encourages me to find ways to earn my own income from childhood. When I was 14, I started teaching violin lessons. When I was 15 years old, I waited in the local tea room. By16, I was in juggling violin class, waitress, babysitter and as my mother’s assistant.
I love the challenge of learning to juggle many different things. I like to buy things with my own money and the satisfaction I bring. I found out how many entrepreneurs I have – to be honest, this sets the stage for me to have my business now!
Looking back, I am very grateful to my parents for letting me pay for a lot of my stuff. This challenged my resourcefulness, search for opportunities, and built on experiences and skills that were very beneficial to me as an adult.
