Pay-paid diseases can help older workers, they need it most-Retirement Research Center

Older workers usually have an acute medical problem that needs to pay attention to immediately, or a spouse or parent who suddenly gets sick and must be taken care of.
Pay -brushing leave provides flexibility for a short time, in order to cope with the age of people, these medical and nursing needs will appear more frequently. A new study confirms that these policies are very effective to help elderly workers maintain their employment level while experiencing crisis.
In this country, providing paid disease leave is a very common approach. Most workers can be accessed through employee benefits. In the past ten years, more and more states and local governments have also demanded paid leave for the hotel industry, the healthcare department or other workers who have not provided employee benefits for low -income employees.
These policies are supporters of elderly workers, so they do not have to reduce their working hours or withdraw from full -time jobs to deal with the health crisis, which will cause them retirement financial hazards at critical moments. Stopping work can end their retirement savings prematurely, or forcing them to start social security welfare faster than the plan.
However, research by the Makedith Slopen of the Cuny Graduate Center shows that Americans in their 60s can get a full -time work than workers who have paid sick leave at work than those who lack paid sick leave.
Consistent with full -time work, people over 65 years of age are more than 9 hours a week, more than people who do not have employee benefits. At the age of 62 to 64, the chance of getting paid vacation is at least seven hours a week. The paid leave is also related to the time of working in the main working year, but the degree is small.
This model also continues it to older black workers. Their health is often older than white workers. But Slopen found that if they have paid vacations, they work more.
For long -term nursing staff (usually women) who take care of their spouses or elderly parents, this benefit is not a solution. Other policies such as paid families and sick leave play an important role in responding to the long -term needs of the guardian. But paid disease leave-maybe because of their work guarantee-indeed help them handle short-term care responsibilities, such as bringing family members to doctors or making them over a health crisis. Researchers have found that elderly women who have sick leave are more working time than women who lack benefits.
Slopen concluded: “Getting paid disease leave may play a role in promoting the ability of elderly workers (especially women) to maintain full -time work.”
