Jasper says housing plan promised by Alberta government after wildfires failed to materialize

The province announced in October plans to build 250 homes in the Rocky Mountain tourist town for people displaced by summer wildfires that destroyed more than 800 homes.
The city says it has received more than 600 applications from families in need of housing, and the province is far from adequate to meet the demand.
The government’s plan will result in the construction of about 60 permanent single-family homes that will occupy all available land for temporary housing, the city said.
Community and Social Services Minister Jason Nickerson said he was “extremely disappointed” that municipalities and the federal government rejected the province’s plan.
Nickerson said he was concerned that any form of temporary housing would be delayed as a result, but the city maintained that some housing could be available by the end of February.
